Oxford Union Debate: AI is an ‘Existential Threat'

On October 19, 2023, our Founder & CEO debated Max Tegmark & Jaan Taalin of the Future of Humanity Institute and authors of the Open Letter to Pause AI on motion: the House believes AI is an Existential Threat.

Yeshimabeit argued what we know to be true: that the biggest existential threat is not a rogue AI but the current concentration of artificial intelligence technologies into the hands of a few. She brilliantly emphasized the urgency of putting the power of AI into the hands of those who need it the most.

We were not informed of our position nor who we would debate until a week before the event, but we knew exactly who we would be debating from the terminology used in the motion.

Our Founder also exposed how the very framing of Existential Threat was not neutral, but based on the writings and work of Nick Bostrom, an open racist and a torchbearer of the modern-day eugenicist movement and Founder of the Future of Humanity Institute.

We do not argue with racists, but we will debate them - especially at bastions of conservative politics like Oxford University, where the eugenics movement was born in the early 19th century.

She is honored to be able to represent the Data for Black Lives movement and all Black people in debunking and exposing these harmful schools of thought masking as an agenda to address “AI harms.”

The video of her speech will be live on the Oxford Union YouTube channel soon. We will be sharing it on this page once it is live.
