D4BL III: Our Bodies Keep Score

Breakout Title: Our Bodies Keep Score

Location: Auditorium

Breakout Description: Each year, more African American women die of heart disease than breast cancer, lung cancer, and strokes combined. Eighty percent of Black women will suffer from uterine fibroids before the age of 50, and Black women in the U.S. are three to five times more likely to experience a pregnancy-related death than their white counterparts. COVID-19 showed what we knew to be true all along - race is not a risk factor; racism is. Structural racism is a preexisting condition. Black women lead our movements and our country and decide elections. We must come together to save their lives—our lives. These speakers are doing just that: this panel will bring together cardiologists, advocates, organizers, birth justice activists, and experts in precision medicine to discuss how we can end the weaponization of health research, policy, and practices against Black women and reclaim data as a powerful tool to ensure Black women and Black communities thrive.

Moderator: Linda Goler Blount, MPH Panelists: Dr. Chelsey R. Carter, Joan Mukogosi, Dr. Zinzi Bailey, Dr. Melicia Whitt-Glover
