D4BL III: Reparations AI Future of Work

Breakout Title: Reparations AI: Future of Work

Location: Auditorium

Breakout Description: Two hundred and thirty years ago, the invention of the cotton engine, or ‘cotton gin,’ revolutionized the US economy. By automating an essential part of growing cotton, the demand for cotton grew, as did the demand for labor. After the cotton gin, the number of enslaved people tripled. Today, Black workers make up 27% of gig workers. Black people are more likely to be employed in jobs that AI will replace. AI-based tools have been incorporated in every stage of the hiring process, and automated surveillance systems monitor factories, offices, and black neighborhoods alike. In the first conversation of the Reparations AI track, we ask: How do advances in artificial intelligence that promise record profit demand exploitation and impede autonomy? How can it be a force multiplier of wealth creation? What will it take to build a mass movement with those labor essential to the advancement of AI at the center? What do reparations look like in the age of AI?
